What is a Capsule Wardrobe? It is a limited number of garments that are interchangeable with one another. Let’s use 12 items for our capsule. Another way to think of a capsule is that each garment should have a minimum of three “friends” or coordinates. Therefore, if all 12 items had 3 coordinates that would total 36 = over a month of looks with no repeats! There are a few things to consider beforehand:
~ Are you more of a pants person or skirt person, or, a bit of both?
~ Do you already know your best colors?
~ Do you know which are your best neutrals – examples are black, gray, white, tan, neutral greens, camel, navy, etc.
~ Consider what is typically easier for you to find: tops vs. bottoms; if bottoms are challenging, start there.
Look for a great pair of jeans (if you are a jeans person; you may substitute something else here) that are figure flattering and fit very well. Dark wash is always a more elevated and slenderizing choice. Next, choose another neutral color, for pants, skirt or shorts. If you would like to add a skirt – choose a solid color to start and later you can add prints/patterns that have at least three colors (makes coordinating so much easier). Personally, I find solid/neutrals on the bottom easiest to work with then I gradually add prints and patterns as I find them. Let’s dress for the warm weather: You may wish to have one or two layering tanks (solid), 3-5 tops (print/pattern), that suit your lifestyle and pair nicely with all three bottoms. Consider a “you” flattering color in a cardigan (long, duster lengths are very chic and on trend right now), or a jacket or blazer for panache and warmth as needed. You may decide to reserve one pair of pants for heels, or, find a sweet spot length that works with low heels and flats. A kimono top is great for layering and can be worn over a coordinating tank and jeans, a tank and skirt, white on white, etc. Let’s call this a casual chic every day capsule: 5 tops, 2 tanks, 3 bottoms, 1 cardigan, 1 kimono (layering piece). That’s 12! See how easy!? You may like to add a few dresses as you branch out. Look at the benefits: Less Brain Fatigue; You are guaranteed to have a month of interchangeable outfits (all adorable, of course!), Less Stress, and More Confidence!
Remember, the colors need to flatter and enhance your own beautiful coloring (material for another post); the clothes must suit your personality and lifestyle (i.e. You gotta love them and they should serve you in all the roles you fulfill), and, they must fit very well.
If you don’t know your best colors, I can help! If you don’t know your best neutrals, I’m there for you! If you hate to shop but want to look fabulous, I’m your stylist. I would be delighted to help you create a capsule wardrobe that checks all the boxes for you!
